COMMITMENT

Alter London is committed to using only cruelty-free materials and here are the reasons why:

Animal Cruelty Millions of innocent animals are killed primarily for their skin each year. Leather is not always a by-product, it is not always produced in efforts to minimise waste but because it is a highly profitable business. Besides cows and lambs, other animals such as deers, pigs, goats, cats, dogs, snakes and crocodiles are also among the victims of the leather industry.

Environmental Pollution In order to turn animal skins into leather, a treatment called 'tanning' is required - it uses heavy chemicals as well as large quantities of water to permanently alter the protein structure of the skin to make it more durable and less susceptible to decomposition. The chemicals pollute the air, soil, rivers and groundwater which affect both human and animal population.

RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION

Overproduction is a serious issue that is not being discussed enough. According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, around 13 million tons of clothing and footwear were produced in 2018 in the United States alone. 1.7 million tons were recycled, 2.2 million tons were incinerated with energy recovery and 9 million tones ended up in landfill.

To reduce the brand's impact on the environment, all items are responsibly produced - they are either made to order or produced in small batches in south east London. Each item is thoughtfully designed and made with care.

PRODUCT & SHIPPING PACKAGING

Majority of mass manufactured fashion items including clothing, handbags and jewellery are individually packaged in clear plastic bags after production to protect them during shipment from the manufacturer to the company. These plastic bags are usually single-use, non-recyclable and non-biodegradable, and most likely end up in landfill or the ocean.

Alter London is committed to reducing plastic pollution, therefore, all our products are packaged in a reusable dust bag or recyclable tissue paper, and only paper stuffing is used when necessary. Furthermore, all our orders are shipped in recyclable cardboard boxes or strong kraft padded envelopes which are filled with cushioning recycled paper fibres instead of bubble wrap, and can be re-used again and again.

Customers are encourage to double check all product information before making a purchase to avoid returns which would waste resources from packaging and carbon emissions from shipping  transportation.
